The German Invasion: Start of the Jewish Holocaust, Adv. Joseph A.Melamed

The “Barbarosa” campaign began with the Nazi German Army invading the U.S.S.R. at 04:00 a.m. on June 22 1941. After attacking Lithuania, the German Army began to spread eastward, northward, and southward into the huge area of Russia.

Within six months most Lithuaniain Jews were murdered. By the end of 1941, most Lithuanian Jews were murdered. Only 40,000 Jews remained, mostly in three main ghettos: Vilna, Kovno, and Shavli. These were left to continue working for the Nazis under conditions of slavery and fear of murder. Continued actions in 1942-4 reduced these numbers to remnants until most were murdered. A relatively small part were sent to German concentration camps, from which few survived.
